The 80th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans was dominate by Audi, as expected. Audi finished an impressive 1-2-3 in Le Mans this year, and the #3 car finished in 5th place. Both hybrid Audi's ran basically flawless races, dominating over the two diesel cars. It should be noted that the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans was the first time ever that a hybrid car won the race overall. The Toyota's showed great speed but the drivers were caught in some nasty situations, the main situation being between an obviously drunk Piergiuseppe Perazzini and the innocent bystander, Anthony Davidson. Anthony got spun, flipped in the air, and collided heavily with the tire barrier at the end of Mulsanne Corner. Piergiuseppe had a very heavy impact as well, but was unharmed. Anthony suffered two broken vertebrae. The sister Toyota took out the DeltaWing on the restart, damaging itself in the process. The DeltaWing was a little worse for wear, and Marino Franchitti, one of the drivers of Ben Bowlby's unorthodox creation, noted that Nakajima's peripheral perception was as bad as it was in Formula 1.
The driver at the time, Satoshi Motoyama, made an astonishing effort to get the car back on track, but couldn't, and the rather heroic driver was in tears and refused to look at the camera, obviously stricken that the race was ruined. Although, it should be noticed that basically everyone has laid 90% of the blame of Nakajima, who just shoved the DeltaWing completely out of the way. An uncalled for move.
Gulf Racing Middle East had a tough time in Le Mans this year. Marc Rostan, as usual, wrecked his car, and the other car had mechanical problems, in the hands of Ludovic Badey. Neither of the cars made it past Lap 100. Corvette had dramas with both cars, one of them just being a brain-dead move by a pit mechanic on the #74, where he didn't fasten on the tire right. Who knows if that is what caused their issues of a "grinding, scraping noise", as Ollie Gavin called it, later on.
Aston Martin had a good run in 3rd, but overall, it was AF Corse who took it home ahead of Luxury Racing in 2nd. Starworks won a hard-fought race in LMP2. Pedro Lamy, Julien Canal, and Patrick Bornhauser took the win in GTE-Am.
